How DHL Express calculates billable weight

  1. Multiply length × width × height in centimetres.
  2. Divide by 5000 and round up to the next 0.5 kg.
  3. Compare with the actual weight (also rounded up). The larger number is billed.

Worked example

A box measuring 18.3 × 14 × 11.6 in that weighs 7.2 lb is billed as 46.5 × 35.6 × 29.5 cm. That is 48,701 cm³ ÷ 5000 = 9.74, rounded up to 10 kg, which is billed instead of the actual weight.

Rule notes

  • 5000 cm³ per kg is the international express standard (200 kg per m³).
  • Billable weight rounds up to the next 0.5 kg.
